Why do you trade?

Ponder this for a second. Why exactly do you trade?…

Well, if you're anything like 99% of the traders out there, then your answer was almost certainly “to make money”. However, the this is virtually never the true answer to the question, even if it is always considered to be the orthodox one.

Now, if you did happen respond “to make money”, let's pose the question in a rather different way… “Why do you TRADE?”, or if you like, “Why do you TRADE… in order to make money?”

The point is that there are a gigantic number of other things you could be doing to get rich. So, why precisely did you choose to trade? Actually, since there ARE an almost infinite number of possibilities, your choice to use Trading as the way to make your fortune represents an opportunity cost, in that since you are spending your time studying and practicing Trading, you therefore don't have the same time available to be studying other subjects. These alternative opportunities might also have brought you riches, perhaps even more so than Trading.

So, ponder the same question again, perhaps a little more deeply this time… “WHY do you trade?”

The answer ultimately has to be, or should be that, apart from money considerations, you do trading because you actually ENJOY it. You chose the medium and task of Trading as a means to make your money and achieve your personal dreams because you prefer it over real estate investing, antique coin collecting, horse gambling, starting a direct mail business, opening a grocery store, or any other alternative money-making activity that you might care to name. This means that, apart from any financial motive, you trade for the sheer pleasure, the intellectual challenge, the emotional kicks, because it happens to coincide with your mental temperament, or whatever else turns you on about it. Sure, you also want to make money, but that is definitely not the SOLE reason why you trade, as we have just shown. The fact is that in the time that it takes you to truly master Trading, you might just as well have started an internet business that went on be valued for hundreds of millions, or even billions, of dollars means that you don't trade for money ALONE.
